With the explosion of private labels and the arrival of novelties (swimming diapers, changes for children who walk ...), there are no less than twenty different products in the supermarket. Our buying guide to choose your baby diapers according to the right criteria.
The first criterion to find one's way: the weight of one's child ... and not the age, because the corpulence varies considerably from one small to another. The layers are most often numbered from 1 to 5, for weights generally corresponding to those indicated below. The size mentioned in parentheses is only an average, we give it as an indication:
Layer 1: from 2 to 5 kg (birth to 2-3 months)
Layer 2: from 3 to 6 kg (birth at 3-4 months)
Layer 3: from 4 to 9 kg (3 months to 10 months)
Layer 4: 7 to 18 kg (6 months to 3 years or more)
Layer size 4+: from 9 to 20 kg (more than 10 months)
Layer 5: from 11 to 25 kg (over 18 months)
Second step: what type of layer to adopt? Classic, learning or disposable diaper? To put it simply, if you buy only classics, you will not really worry. They are suitable for all ages. The learning layer (which is put on like a pair of panties) has never shown that children find it more comfortable to run or go for a swim ... or that the kids get clean sooner! As for swimming in the pool or at sea, they must generally be very short for toddlers and the bikini is not an absolute imperative, although it may be a little more practical. For older children (from one year old), who start to paddle longer, the bikini can be more practical than the traditional diaper that will become waterlogged and heavy.
DISPOSABLE, WASHABLE, CLASSIC, ECOLOGICAL?
The traditional layer synthetic veil remains largely predominant, but two small news surf on the green wave: washable diapers and ecological disposable diapers. The first is in textile. For example, Xiaomi Baby Cotton Diaper is machine washable and reusable a lot of times. They are currently found only in clothing stores or organic stores, and on the Internet. The ecological disposables display a minimum of 50% of natural materials, the total absence of lotion, perfume, alcohol, dye, and a veil keeping in contact with the skin 100% non-chemical.
The advantage of the classics: these are the cheapest to buy. The washable cost about 20 to 30 € each and it takes a dozen to start (eventually, of course, the investment is rather lower than the disposable). Ecological ones are more expensive than first-price disposable diapers, but no more than traditional brands. The advantage claimed washable: less waste, so more environmentally friendly. Green Disposables, too, are more "green" because they contain fewer chemicals and cellulose is derived from wood from industries engaged in sustainable development. Both also claim to be less irritating because they do not incorporate lotion, fragrance, color and contain no or fewer chemicals.
Last but not least, when we know the budget layers of young parents: the price. For ten years, the first prices and brands have flourished. It must be said that in the face of the market's stakes, appetites have become sharper. And the results are a reflection of the extent of the efforts made. Branded or discounted layers today have quite honorable results in terms of absorption, strength, and comfort ... Why pay more?
